Expertise

Strategic, Analytic, and Regulatory expertise for energy-conscious enterprises.  We have decades of experience navigating complex energy markets.

Bringing our energy to the energy transition

The Boost team is a tightly knit group of highly capable professionals. From our roots in the electricity industry we’ve grown to support clients in adjacent spaces including Hydrogen, Transportation, Lithium Mining, and others. We are creative, ambitious, and passionate about tackling difficult problems.

Projects require the coordinated effort of experts in a range of disciplines across multiple workstreams to create value in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Boost integrates with client teams in a flexible and collaborative way, accelerating development while keeping the focus on achieving success.

Within our strategy practice, we help clients understand the considerations relevant to major decisions including which markets to enter, business model changes, whether to build or buy, reinvest or divest. Our work includes gathering the necessary inputs to a study, performing analyses both qualitative and quantitative, and preparing communication materials to help socialize the results. These include board papers, presentations for a range of different audiences, long-form reports, content for press releases and other documents as required by the client’s business practices.

Asset development is a complex undertaking with meaningful financial risks. Not only can success or failure hinge on a small number of monetization events or investment approvals, inefficiency can erode the value of successful outcomes and even jeopardize outcomes entirely. We bring a flexible approach to asset development, complementing teams where our skill sets are needed and working with others in close collaboration. We have provided analytical, commercial, regulatory and project management support for clients. As each situation and project has unique requirements, please contact us to start the conversation and we can work with you to quickly identify a potential fit.

Our analytics capabilities include modelling the future operations of proposed assets, development-oriented configuration studies, and investment-oriented financial modelling. We conduct extensive scenario analyses and sensitivity testing, in consultation with the client and the other subject matter experts supporting the project. We can pursue both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to analysis, subject to the needs of the project and client preferences.  We have the capability and experience to provide fit-for-purpose support from the earliest conceptual stages where fast, iterative, high level analyses are most appropriate, all the way to the final investment decision where detailed investment-grade modelling of profit drivers and financing considerations (including complex debt structures) is required. We also have experience performing more advanced analyses and data visualization.

Boost’s proprietary long term price forecasting engine builds up a fundamental view of Alberta power market supply and energy demand at hourly resolution over a 30 year time horizon. We rigorously test our forecasts for realistic volatility profiles, supply dynamics (scarcity and surplus), intraday and seasonal patterns in demand, autocorrelation effects, power import/export dynamics and the impact of new technology.

We use this forecasting engine to inform project development work where the asset is either exposed to consuming grid-served power to meet demand, or has the ability to export surplus on-site generation back to the grid. In some cases both of those statements are true for a project, depending on the context and configuration. The risks and opportunities arising from exposure to the power market and mitigation of that exposure through contracting, are material contributors to project economics and financial performance.
